Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) is presented by
Association "Film XXI" . It is the only international
feature film festival in Romania.
TIFF has as its main objective the promotion of cinematographic
art by presenting some of the most innovative and spectacular films
of the moment that feature both originality and independence of
expression, that reflect unusual cinematic language forms or focus
on current trends in youth culture. It is meant to be an annual
event.
The second edition of TIFF will be held between the 23rd and 31st
of May, 2003 in Cluj, Transilvania. The films will be shown in three
venues and, whenever possible, each will be screened twice.
The Festival consists of the following sections:
- Competition,
offering a significant selection of current International young
cinema. This meant-to-be fresh and original section is opened
to first and second films only. One of the films in this category
will be screened at the opening of the Festival
- SuperNova,
a non-competitive panorama, including films awarded in other festivals,
which aroused exceptional world interest during the last season
and a local distributors program featuring special premieres for
Romanian public. One of the films in this category will be screened
at the closing of the Festival
- Romanian
Cinema
- premieres and a special retrospective of Romanian films
- Shadows
- horror and fantasy films; a special collection of recent horror
and fantasy films destined for midnight screenings
- 3
x 3
- 3 profiles of established filmmakers featuring 3 films each
- Tranzit
- video screenings (documentaries and horror/fantasy shorts)
- Special
events, conferences and workshops
The films entered for the first four sections must comply with the
following conditions:
- Entries must
have been produced within the last two years and not previously
screened in Romania.
- All feature
films will be presented in their original versions with Romanian
subtitles or simultaneous translation. It is highly advised to
submit prints with English subtitles.
- The format
for features must be 35 mm.
- Shorts will
be screened in Beta SP.
- There
are no restrictions by length or genre for films.
An international
jury composed of 5 personalities of various nationalities from the
world of cinema and the arts will judge the competitive films and
award the following prizes:
- Transylvania
Trophy - for Best Film (6000 $)
- Special Jury
Prize (3000 $)
- Best Performance
Award (1000 Euro)
- Best Cinematography
- Viewers'
choice
To participate
to the 2nd edition of TIFF, the following conditions
are required:
- a fully
completed entry form together with a VHS (PAL / NTSC) tape, stills,
synopsis and a transcript of films' subtitles should be sent to
the festival office before March 15, 2003.
- Prints should
be forwarded by courier to: Transilvania International Film Festival,
address: St. N. Beldiceanu no. 12, Bucharest 1, Romania. They
must arrive before May 15.
- Press material
and publicity for each film (10 press-books and 10 stills plus
1Beta SP promos and 10 posters) must also reach the Festival by
May 15.
Rules for preview
by the selection committee:
- A VHS tape
(PAL) having English or French subtitles plus a transcript of
the dialogue/subtitle list in English or French should be sent
by courier or by ordinary mail to the Festival Office no later
than March 15, 2003. Preview tapes of films not selected cannot
be returned unless specifically agreed in advance.
- The selection
committee will try to inform the applicants of its decision by
April 15, 2003.
All transport
costs incurred by sending the print to and from Romania must be
borne by the entity or individual(s) registering it for participation.
The Festival insurance policy covers fire, theft, damage and destruction
of the print for the period spanning its arrival until its return.
The sender is requested to inform the Festival on the means of dispatch,
date of shipment, flight and Airway bill number.
The film must be sent prepaid. The Festival will not pay for the
return transportation charges.
All prints will be returned within four weeks after the festival.
If the film has to be returned to another address this has to be
marked on the application form as well as the desired date of arrival
at the return address.
The Festival Direction will determine the order and date of the
screening of all films.
The Festival is open to the public. A significant number of accredited
national and international press, TV and distributors also participate.
Directors whose films have been selected for competition are invited
as participants for the festival's duration. Accommodation and allowance
costs (hotel. meals) of the partcipants are covered by the TIFF.
Travel costs will not be covered.
Participation in the Festival implies the unconditional acceptance
of all aforementioned regulations.
